Western Carolina's Mark Speir rips ESPN's Herbstreit for FCS comments
Western Carolina head coach Mark Speir took Week 13 as an opportunity to defend FCS football teams.
ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit, a former Ohio State quarterback, was more than critical of SEC teams scheduling games against FCS schools late in the season, calling the Week 13 matchups the worst thing that goes on in college football.
Speir, whose team played the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday, wasn't amused by those comments, according to Drew Champlin of AL.com. Although he didn't name Herbstreit, he did reference his previous position.
"A guy had a silver spoon in his mouth all his life, Ohio State, primadonna state quarterback talking about, 'It's an embarrassment,'" said Speir. "He ain't ever coached."
Speir took the comments perceiving FCS teams as softer competition personally:
I'm just proud of FCS football, I'm proud of our football team, I hope America doesn't listen to a guy who sits behind a mike that hasn't ever done it, with that silver spoon in his mouth, he never had probably a bloody nose or a callus like some of these guys.
Western Carolina lost 48-14 to Alabama.
