Upset of the Night: Georgia Tech takes it to Georgia in overtime thriller

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

In the dying seconds of the game, Georgia Tech quarterback Justin Thomas tried to block out the Sanford Stadium roars that reminded him of his mistake moments earlier.

Then he looked up.

Sailing through the air was a 53-yard game-tying field goal, the longest of sophomore Harrison Butker's career. The kick just scraped by, but it was good enough to extend the game, thus providing Thomas with one more shot to make amends.

Thomas did just that, leading his team to a 30-24 overtime victory. The Yellow Jackets left Athens, Ga. with 399 rushing yards and 64 passing yards against the Bulldogs.

After Georgia Tech's overtime touchdown, Hutson Mason's interception on the last play of the game sealed a victory for the Yellow Jackets. Just prior to that was Thomas's mistake in regulation - a fumble that gave Georgia life. In true Bulldogs fashion, they scored and converted the PAT to force the extra frame.

Overall, Georgia quarterback Mason was good enough, throwing for 194 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He made one mistake that cost his team the rivalry.

On the ground, Bulldogs running back Nick Chubb looked as though he was going to have an explosive game. He busted a 65-yard run and added a touchdown in the first quarter, but then largely disappeared.

His counterpart Zach Laskey, on the other hand, wouldn't stop showing up. Laskey scored rushing touchdowns in the third, fourth and overtime period and finished with 140 yards on 26 carries.

It can be argued that Thomas is the happiest man in the state of Georgia, but that's up for debate.

If one thing is for certain, it's that he couldn't bear listening to the deafening screams of the crowd in the fourth quarter. By overtime, he couldn't listen enough.
