Top 5 college football photos of the year

Christopher Hanewinckel / USA TODAY Sports

This college football season provided many memorable moments. Some filled with joy, some filled with pain, and others that showed what competition is all about.

Here are the top five pictures from the season that was.

The Axe-man

Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon does his best to inflict fear while wielding Paul Bunyan's axe, won by the Badgers after a 34-24 win over Minnesota.

Gordon finished the game with 151 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries.

Attack the field

Ole Miss fans stormed the field at the end of the Rebels' 23-17 win over then-No. 3 Alabama

The scene, which resulted in both goal posts being taken down and divided among fans, cost the school $50,000 due to an SEC fine.

Cultural pride

Oregon Quarterback Marcus Mariota poses with his Heisman Award trophy while wearing a special lei during the Dec. 13 ceremony.

The junior received 90.9 percent of the possible votes, beating out Gordon and the Crimson Tide's Amari Cooper for the prize.

Sky high

Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson showed off his freakish talent during a 41-0 win over NC State.

Watson kept the ball on a read-option, rolled to his right and hurdled over cornerback Jack Tocho for the touchdown.

More than a rivalry game

Michigan and Ohio State is probably the most heated rivalry in all of college football, but the Nov. 29 edition of the contest offered one of the most tender moments seen between the two programs.

When Buckeyes' quarterback J.T. Barrett went down with a broken ankle, Wolverines' quarterback Devin Gardner came to his side to comfort his opponent.

The gesture was so moving that Gardner received a 'thank-you' letter from the Buckeyes.
