Jackson, a junior, threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns, completing 15-of-24 passes, as Rice dominated offensively. Jackson also rushed for 44 yards on 12 carries, leading his team on the ground and in the air.
Dennis Parks caught five passes for 109 yards to lead all players, and was one of three Rice wide receivers to record a touchdown pass.
Fresno State quarterback Brian Burrell had a disastrous game, completing 10-of-20 passes for only 44 yards. He threw two interceptions.
Late in the game, the victory secured, Rice put 4-foot-9 senior running back Jayson Carter into the game, and he rushed for two yards in what was a great moment:
Rice finishes 8-5 with the win, while Fresno State, who came into the game with a 6-7 record, said goodbye to dreams of a .500 season. The loss was the Bulldogs' sixth straight in a bowl game, and first all time to Rice in seven meetings.
''It's frustrating,'' Fresno State coach Tim DeRuyter said. ''We've got to figure out a way to get over the hump.''
The Associated Press has more on some dubious records set by the Bulldogs on Wednesday night:
Fresno State broke its own Hawaii Bowl record for fewest points - it had 10 in a lopsided loss to SMU two years ago. It was the first time the Bulldogs did not score a touchdown in any game since a 51-0 loss to Boise State four years ago, and the six points were the fewest for them in any bowl game in school history.
