Report: Jim Harbaugh will accept Michigan coaching job

Cary Edmondson / USA TODAY Sports

Jim Harbaugh is set to trade in the Bay Area for The Big House.

The San Francisco 49ers head coach will reportedly leave the NFL to accept the University of Michigan's head coaching job.

Harbaugh's departure was reported late Saturday evening by Dave Feldman of CSN Bay Area, who added Harbaugh would confirm the news Tuesday in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Feldman went to high school with Harbaugh and remains friends with the 51-year-old.

Harbaugh will still coach San Francisco on Sunday against Arizona, according to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area.

Although the news has yet to be confirmed by Harbaugh himself, the coach has already received a send-off by 49ers right tackle Anthony Davis.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Harbaugh has not officially agreed to a contract with the Wolverines, although he would not be able to do so until getting out of his contract with the 49ers. Harbaugh has one year left on his deal with San Francisco and an agreement to allow him to leave would not come until after Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals.

A pair of officials from Michigan are in town to meet with Harbaugh, according to ESPN, furthering speculation that an agreement on a contract is on the verge of completion.

Harbaugh, who played quarterback for the Wolverines from 1983-86, takes over a team that is coming off a tumultuous 5-7 season.

The 49ers, meanwhile, will now need to find a replacement for the coach who led them to three consecutive NFC Championship appearances and a Super Bowl berth in 2012.

Harbaugh's record with San Francisco prior to Sunday is 43-19-1 since he was hired in 2011, the same season he was named Coach of the Year.

He previously held head coaching jobs with the University of San Diego and Stanford University before jumping to the NFL.
