Michigan has hired former Buffalo Bills running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley to serve the same role, the school announced Saturday.
Wheatley will make his return to Ann Arbor after an illustrious career as a Wolverines running back from 1991-94. He graduated as Michigan's second all-time rusher, but he has dropped to fifth place since.
"Michigan holds a special place in my heart and the chance to return here and help guide this program is truly a dream homecoming," Wheatley said. "Michigan helped make me the man, husband and father I am today, and I am passionate about passing those lessons on to the next generation of young men in Maize and Blue. I look forward to getting to work and thank Coach Harbaugh for the opportunity."
Having guided the Bills running backs for the past two seasons, Wheatley led the NFL's second-best rushing team in 2013, averaging 144.2 yards per game.
In 2015, Wheatley will be tasked with coaching a Michigan running game that struggled mightily in 2014. The Wolverines ranked No. 62 in the FBS, averaging 162.8 yards per game.
