Louisville didn't violate any NCAA regulations, but it defied a serious unwritten code of recruiting ethics.

With a mere 48 hours until the National Signing Day deadline, the Cardinals asked running back Matt Colburn, a recruit from South Carolina, to greyshirt, according to Chris Dearing of The State.

"They want him to greyshirt, which is him coming in next January," said Tom Knotts, Colburn's high school coach. "That wasn't our understanding. Matt has been committed to them almost eight months. We're all very upset about it.

The situation isn't particularity unique, as Louisville isn't the first or the last to do it. That being said, with signing day just around the corner, it's going to be a scramble for Colburn to find a school after shutting down his recruitment for so long.

"Right now, we're being proactive in trying to reach out to other schools but he really shut himself off from all the other schools relative to his recruitment," Knotts said. "We have to get his name back out there. We're not happy about it. We'll see what else might pop up."

The Cardinals recently added former TCU defensive standout Devonte Fields to this year's class, which takes one scholarship. But his addition couldn't have been premeditated as Colburn committed prior to Fields' release from the Horned Frogs.
