Sam Ukwuachu's father: Briles wasn't told about violent incident involving son
The father of former Baylor defensive end Sam Ukwuachu says Bears head coach Art Briles wasn't informed about incidents of violence and sexual abuse in his son's past, prior to Ukwuachu transferring to the school.
In an interview with KWTX, Felix Ukwuachu said then-Boise State head coach Chris Petersen said he would recommend Sam to his "friend Art Briles," and that Felix was within earshot when Peterson made the call.
"We could hear the whole conversation," Felix said. "Petersen said 'Samuel is a dynamic player, a good boy' (and) said he would be pleased if you take him into your school."
Ukwuachu, 22, was convicted Aug. 20 of raping a Baylor freshman soccer player in October 2013. The next day, he was sentenced to 10 years probation and 180 days in county jail, and ordered to perform 400 hours of community service.
During the trial, his former girlfriend at Boise State testified that he punched her, choked her, and physically restrained her, but the university said nothing was ever reported while Ukwuachu or the woman were students.
Felix Ukwuachu went on to say that his son wasn't released from the Broncos because of sexual abuse, or any other instance of violence.
"Samuel was depressed, Samuel was homesick, it was making him ... think suicidal thoughts, so we decided that we told him you have to come home," Ukwuachu said.
"Samuel was in good standing with University of Boise State."
