West Virginia no match for TCU's dynamic duo of Boykin, Doctson
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports
Trevone Boykin threw for 388 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Josh Doctson, as TCU rolled past West Virginia Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas.
The dynamic duo connected 11 times for 183 yards, while Boykin added 84 yards and a score on the ground. The Horned Frogs jumped out to a 17-0 lead and coasted to their eighth win of the season.
Here's What You Need To Know:
- TCU grabbed an early lead on a 17-yard Doctson touchdown catch, extending the nation's longest first-quarter touchdown streak to 21 games.
- Doctson's seven first-half catches gave him 67 on the season, breaking the Horned Frogs single-season record previously held by Josh Boyce.
- It's the third major record this season for Doctson after he previously broke the program's single-season mark for touchdown catches and receiving yards. He also joined the Oakland Raiders' Michael Crabtree as the only FBS receivers in the past 20 years with six straight games of 100 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
- Boykin has now thrown for three touchdowns or more in six of the Horned Frogs' eight games this season, and his 28 touchdown passes are just one behind Bowling Green's Matt Johnson and Baylor's Seth Russell for tops in the nation.
- With his 472 yards of total offense, Boykin now has 12,041 for his career, breaking the previous TCU record of 11,925 held by Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton.
- Mountaineers quarterback Skyler Howard failed to top the 200-yard passing mark for the third time in four games, as TCU almost doubled the West Virginia offense in yardage 616-327.
- The Mountaineers were penalized nine times for 114 yards, including three drive-extending calls in the first, prompting this reaction from coach Dana Holgorsen.
- TCU and West Virginia both entered the Big 12 in 2012 and the previous meetings between the schools had been decided by a combined five points.
Play Of The Game
Boykin is widely regarded as one of the favorites for the Heisman Trophy, and plays like this touchdown run in the first quarter illustrate why.
TCU faces its toughest opponent of the season next week when the Horned Frogs play at No. 12 Oklahoma State, while West Virginia hosts Texas Tech.
