The transfer is an interesting development for the Aggies, and for Allen, who arrived at College Station in 2014 as the No. 1-ranked quarterback recruit in his class.
After a promising freshman year, Allen entered 2015 as the Aggies starter and got off to an impressive start. He threw 13 touchdowns to just two interceptions, and began the season with five straight wins.
Then came the Alabama game, which is when everything turned south. Allen threw three picks and Texas A&M lost. His performance the next week wasn't much better and the Aggies fell again, this time to Ole Miss.
Coach Kevin Sumlin eventually stripped Allen of the starting job and opened a quarterback competition that lasted through the remainder of the year.
While the loss of Allen could potentially hurt Texas A&M, the Aggies also have freshman Kyler Murray, a former five-star recruit in the 2015 class. Murray flashed signs of brilliance this season, but struggled to find consistency and had off-field issues as well.
As for Allen, he'll be required to sit out the 2016 season unless he transfers to an FCS program, which sounds unlikely.
Oklahoma has already been mentioned as a potential landing spot for Allen, who hopes to stay in a Power 5 conference and have an opportunity to start in 2017. The Sooners could provide that chance, as Baker Mayfield is set to graduate after the 2016 campaign.
"Oklahoma comes to mind because it does fit all those things, and my old (high school) teammate (Mark Andrews) is a receiver there, and coach (Bob) Stoops is an all-time great coach," Allen told Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports.
Cal is another possible destination for the pocket passer, Gerry Hamilton of ESPN reports, as Jared Goff is also on track to graduate by the time Allen is eligible to play again.
Allen threw for 2,210 yards with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions last season.
