Texas A&M confirms Kyler Murray will transfer

You can add another name to the growing list of quarterbacks to make their way out of College Station.

Freshman quarterback Kyler Murray will, in fact, transfer from Texas A&M, the school confirmed in a one-line press release. The news was first reported Thursday afternoon by Billy Liucci of TexAgs.com.

"To all my family, friends and fans out there, I thank you for your love and your continued support," Murray said on Twitter. "I will forever be grateful for the opportunities I've been given and relationships I've made at Texas A&M University. I wish nothing but the best to all my guys in that locker room."

Murray's family told ESPN that he'll be able to transfer to any program outside the SEC that isn't scheduled to play the Aggies over the next four years.

Reports of Murray's pending departure exploded Wednesday, but coach Kevin Sumlin denied them, and said Murray would be the team's starter in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 30.

Sumlin added that Murray would return to practice Thursday after taking Wednesday to reconsider the situation, but reports indicated that Murray was again absent from the team's workout.

Murray, a former five-star recruit, is the second pivot to request a transfer from the Aggies in as many weeks, and the fourth since 2012.

With Murray and Kyle Allen both on their way out of the program, Jake Hubenak appears to be in position to start the Aggies' bowl game. Hubenak began the 2015 season as the team's third-string quarterback. The sophomore has attempted just 27 passes in his career, all of them this year.

The exit of Murray continues an ugly trend for Texas A&M and coach Kevin Sumlin. While Sumlin has been a masterful quarterback recruiter - he has highly ranked Tate Martell coming in 2017, too - Sumlin has struggled to develop players at the position in the post-Johnny Manziel era.

Murray threw for 686 yards and rushed for 335 yards as a freshman. He appeared in eight games (three starts) and recorded six total touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
