Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith was helped off the field in the first quarter of the Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State with a gruesome-looking injury.

Following the loss to the Buckeyes, head coach Brian Kelly didn't have reassuring news, instead saying Smith suffered a "significant knee injury." There's no timetable for his recovery.

Smith posted a photo on his Instagram account after the game, which appears to show his injured left leg wrapped up in a cast.

God got us 🙏🏾

After getting looked at on the sideline, Smith was carted off to the locker room. He later emerged in street clothes, and on crutches.

Smith - the Butkus Award winner - is projected to be a top-10 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

He had 113 total tackles and nine tackles for loss entering Friday's game.
