Georgia plans to use 3-running back system in 2016
Nick Chubb appears to be getting healthier by the day, but Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has no plans to thrust him into an every-down role in 2016.
In fact, Smart revealed Monday he's hoping to rotate three running backs this season, including Chubb, Sony Michel, and a developmental project.
"You can't get through the SEC unless you have three, and right now, we have one that's healthy out there," Smart told Adam Rittenberg of ESPN. "We've got a couple young pups, we signed a guy, but that's the scariest position because even with Nick at 100 percent, which I don't think he's going to be 100 percent right away, we've only got two. We want to platoon them. There's just too much unknown right now on Nick to feel certain."
Chubb is coming off a torn PCL that ended his sophomore season in October. Prior to the injury, he rushed for 747 yards and seven touchdowns on just 92 carries, good for a ridiculous 8.2 yards per carry.
Michel took over Chubb's role afterwards, and finished the season with 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns while going for 5.3 yards per carry.
The Bulldogs running back corps this year is also set to include four-star signee Elijah Holyfield, the son of former boxing great Evander Holyfield.
