Virginia Tech's Deon Newsome convicted on reckless driving charge
Virginia Tech wide receiver Deon Newsome has been convicted of a lesser charge of reckless driving in relation to being found passed out on a motorized cart inside a Walmart.
Newsome was suspended from the team in October after he was charged with DUI upon telling police he drove to the store in his car around 5 a.m. That charge was reduced to a reckless driving charge, according to The Roanoke Times' Jacob Demmitt.
According to Montgomery County Commonwealth attorney Mary Pettitt, prosecutors could prove Newsome drove the vehicle to the store, but couldn’t prove his level of impairment because he was arrested three hours later.
When Newsome appeared in court Monday, he pleaded not guilty, but was found guilty and sentenced to 60 days in jail, though the sentence was suspended and he won't serve any time. Newsome will also have to pay a $250 fine, complete a VASAP program, and will lose his driver's license for six months.
The redshirt junior is currently practicing with the Hokies.
