Longtime NCAA referee Oliver "Butch" Mousseaux passed away Friday due to a head injury suffered from an on-ice fall one week earlier. He was 48.

Mousseaux fell and hit his head on the ice during pregame warmups for a playoff game between Ferris State and Michigan Tech last Friday in Grand Rapids, Mich. He was immediately transferred to local hospital, and was placed in a medically-induced coma. He suffered a brain hemorrhage, according to the Denver Post.

He is survived by his wife and three children.

Mousseaux holds the distinction of being the only Native American to referee an NHL game, getting the call after 9/11, when Canadian officials were unable to cross the border. His NHL referee jersey is in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
