Wednesday's Starting Pitcher Value Rankings
Here are theScore's starting pitcher value rankings for Wednesday, May 25 (all stats exclude Tuesday's games):
Value Rankings

Top Options
Name | Opponent | Value |
---|---|---|
Colby Lewis (TEX) | vs. LAA | 8 |
Dillon Gee (KC) | at MIN | 7 |
Tyler Duffey (MIN) | vs. KC | 7 |
Lewis' peripheral stats suggest he'll regress, but for now he's pitched exactly seven innings in each of his last five starts while allowing three or fewer runs. Though Lewis has only been credited with three wins, he's been extremely steady.
Relative to his price, Gee has been solid in his last three outings, pitching at least five innings in each and allowing five total runs, while striking out 13. He makes for an affordable complement to a bigger name in two-pitcher formats.
Counterpart Duffey could be solid against the injury-riddled Royals. Prior to allowing six runs to the Blue Jays in his last start, Duffey struck out 22 over three starts prior, allowing just four earned runs.
Mid-Tier Targets
Name | Opponent | Value |
---|---|---|
Jake Arrieta (CHC) | at STL | 7 |
Steven Matz (NYM) | at WAS | 7 |
Dan Straily (CIN) | at LAD | 7 |
Junior Guerra (MIL) | at ATL | 7 |
Tyler Wilson (BAL) | at HOU | 6 |
Tanner Roark (WAS) | vs. NYM | 6 |
Aaron Nola (PHI) | at DET | 6 |
James Shields (SD) | at SF | 6 |
Steven Wright (BOS) | vs. COL | 6 |
Jose Quintana (CWS) | vs. CLE | 6 |
Marco Estrada (TOR) | at NYY | 6 |
Rubby De La Rosa (ARI) | at PIT | 6 |
Hector Santiago (LAA) | at TEX | 6 |
Carlos Martinez (STL) | vs. CHC | 6 |
Corey Kluber (CLE) | at CWS | 5 |
Ivan Nova (NYY) | vs. TOR | 5 |
Mike Foltynewicz (ATL) | vs. MIL | 5 |
Jake Peavy (SF) | vs. SD | 5 |
Hisashi Iwakuma (SEA) | vs. OAK | 5 |
At Arrieta's price, anything short of perfection results is a mildly disappointing fantasy night. He has given up five runs over his last three starts, and faces the Cardinals, baseball's second highest-scoring offense.
While Martinez has struggled in his last two starts, his best outing of the season came against the Cubs in late April when he allowed just one run in seven innings.
While Wright has largely pitched well, trusting him in a hitter's park against numerous power bats is a risk. Kluber has been all over the place, despite his strikeout prowess.
Nothing to See Here
Name | Opponent | Value |
---|---|---|
Matt Andriese (TB) | vs. MIA | 4 |
Zach Neal (OAK) | at SEA | 4 |
Collin McHugh (HOU) | vs. BAL | 4 |
Chad Bettis (COL) | at BOS | 4 |
Scott Kazmir (LAD) | vs. CIN | 4 |
Anibal Sanchez (DET) | vs. PHI | 3 |
Jeff Locke (PIT) | vs. ARI | 3 |
Justin Nicolino (MIA) | at TB | 2 |
Kazmir can rack up the strikeouts, but can also be victimized by the long ball - he's allowed at least one home run in each of his last four starts, and five times has allowed two or more in a single game.
Numerous right-handed power bats in Tampa Bay's lineup could take advantage of Nicolino, who has allowed four runs in three of his last four starts. Perhaps surprisingly, the Rays lead the majors in home runs.
