Watch: Billy Crystal delivers touching eulogy at Ali funeral
Leave it to a comedian to bring Muhammad Ali's family, friends, and fans to tears.
Speaking at Ali's funeral on Friday, Billy Crystal gave a wondrous tribute to the legendary sportsman who recently passed away at the age of 74.
Crystal recalled how it was his imitation of Ali and broadcaster Howard Cosell that not only gave him his first big break in show business, but endeared him to the boxer himself.
He lauded Ali as being so universally beloved that his death was felt across the globe.
"Today, this outpouring and love of support proves that 35 years after he stopped fighting, he is still the champion of the world," Crystal said.
"Last week when we heard the news, time stopped. There was no war, there were no terrorists, no global catastrophes, the world stopped, took a deep breath, and sighed."
The two men grew incredibly close despite having little in common besides their status as celebrities. Ali once stopped attending a country club when Crystal made him aware of their antisemitic policies.
On a lighter note, Crystal told a classic story about them losing it at Cosell's funeral when he told Ali that Cosell wasn't being buried with his hairpiece.
"Well then how will God recognize him?" Ali asked.
"Champ," Crystal replied. "Once he opens his mouth, God will know."
But the eulogy closed on a sentimental note that reminded everyone how Ali's boxing career was just one aspect of his extraordinary life.
"This brash young man who thrilled us, angered us, confused and challenged us, ultimately became a silent messenger of peace who taught us that life is best when you build bridges between people, not walls," Crystal said.
"At his heart he was still a kid from Louisville who ran with the gods, and walked with the crippled, and smiled at the foolishness of it all. He is gone, but he will never die. He was my big brother."
