theScore's Week 10 Fantasy Starting Pitcher Power Rankings
Here is the Week 10 edition of theScore's Fantasy Starting Pitcher Power Rankings, in which we list the top 30 starters in fantasy baseball using standard 5x5 scoring (Value Based Ranks (VBR) provided by FantasyPros; stats through Tuesday):
1. LHP Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers (LW: 1)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 9 | 122 | 1.52 | 0.65 |
It's difficult to choose just one incredible Kershaw stat per week. Here's this week's edition: The legendary lefty has a 1.16 ERA and a 0.52 WHIP over the last 30 days, with just two walks in 39 innings over that span.
2. RHP Jake Arrieta, Cubs (LW: 2)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
2 | 10 | 90 | 1.86 | 0.95 |
Arrieta returned to the win column last time out, allowing just two runs over seven innings against Atlanta. The three strikeouts were a concern, but given his ability to punch out batters at will, fantasy owners needn't worry.
3. LHP Jon Lester, Cubs (LW: 5)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
4 | 8 | 85 | 1.89 | 0.95 |
Lester is dialed in, having allowed just two earned runs over his previous four starts while racking up 33 strikeouts over 30 innings in that stretch. He has little chance of leapfrogging the top two, but he's still having a career year.
4. RHP Jose Fernandez, Marlins (LW: 3)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
5 | 9 | 118 | 2.57 | 1.04 |
Fernandez saw his personal eight-game winning streak come to an end last time out, allowing four runs over six innings to Arizona. But he added eight strikeouts, and remains within striking distance of Kershaw among K leaders.
5. RHP Johnny Cueto, Giants (LW: 8)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
3 | 9 | 81 | 2.16 | 0.99 |
Cueto is looking like the free-agent signing of the year, coming off eight solid innings with eight strikeouts in a no-decision last time out. He is pitching as well as he has in his career, and that's great news for fantasy owners.

6. RHP Stephen Strasburg, Nationals (LW: 9)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
9 | 10 | 110 | 3.03 | 1.07 |
Strasburg doesn't have to be "on" to return fantasy value, as proven last time out when he allowed four runs but struck out 10 in a win over Philadelphia. He has seven double-digit K efforts in 2016 - with many more on the way.
7. RHP Max Scherzer, Nationals (LW: 18)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
7 | 8 | 118 | 3.40 | 1.00 |
Scherzer's sizzling June (3-0, 1.23 ERA, 28 Ks in 22 innings) has him back in the top 10, where he belongs. Even more significantly, he has allowed just two homers in three starts this month after being taken deep 10 times in May.
8. LHP Madison Bumgarner, Giants (LW: 6)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
8 | 7 | 99 | 1.99 | 1.07 |
Remember Bumgarner's dismal opening month? Well, he has gone 5-0 with a 0.96 ERA, 61 Ks in 56 1/3 innings and a .181/.242/.255 opposition slash line in eight starts since. Hope you didn't sell low in April.
9. LHP Chris Sale, White Sox (LW: 4)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
6 | 10 | 86 | 2.87 | 1.01 |
Nine runs allowed in 12 1/3 innings this month is a warning sign, for sure, but even more worrisome is the four home runs against in two June starts. Sale remains an all-world talent, but he has to keep the ball in the park.
10. RHP Noah Syndergaard, Mets (LW: 7)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
11 | 6 | 95 | 2.00 | 1.00 |
Syndergaard is unbeaten in his last seven starts, going 4-0 with a 1.41 ERA and 46 strikeouts over 38 1/3 innings in that span. Additionally, he hasn't allowed an earned run at Citi Field since May 1. Not bad.

11. RHP Danny Salazar, Indians (LW: 13)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
14 | 7 | 89 | 2.19 | 1.14 |
Salazar remains one of the most electric young pitchers in baseball, fanning at least eight in six of his last eight starts. Walks remain an issue, but fantasy owners will happily take a little bad with a whole lot of good.
12. RHP John Lackey, Cubs (LW: 10)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
10 | 7 | 84 | 2.63 | 0.93 |
As good as Lackey was in May, he has been even better in June - holding opponents scoreless over 13 2/3 innings while fanning 17 and walking just two. This can't possibly last, but he's as hot as anyone in baseball right now.
13. RHP Steven Wright, Red Sox (LW: 15)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
12 | 7 | 70 | 2.09 | 1.13 |
The veteran knuckleballer continues to shock the fantasy community, having gone without allowing an earned run in back-to-back starts while winning each of his last four outings. He's a sell-high option.
14. LHP Drew Pomeranz, Padres (LW: 12)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
15 | 5 | 83 | 2.44 | 1.13 |
Pomeranz continues to be one of the biggest hard-luck pitching options in fantasy, falling to 5-6 last time out despite boasting a 2.44 ERA and well over a strikeout per inning. Wins aside, he has been a fantasy revelation.
15. RHP Marco Estrada, Blue Jays (LW: 16)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
13 | 4 | 71 | 2.57 | 1.00 |
Surprisingly, Estrada has been among the best pitchers in the AL over the past 12 months. Fantasy owners certainly have to be pleased, though they could probably use a few more ticks in the win column.

16. LHP Jose Quintana, White Sox (LW: 19)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
16 | 5 | 81 | 2.66 | 1.09 |
The demise of the White Sox offense has had a catastrophic impact on Quintana, who hasn't won in over a month despite registering four quality starts in six outings since his last victory. You might be able to buy low here.
17. LHP Rich Hill, Athletics (LW: 14)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
17 | 8 | 74 | 2.25 | 1.14 |
Hill continues to trickle down the list as a groin injury keeps him sidelined. His absence could be longer than anticipated, as he isn't expected to throw off a mound until next week. Keep him stashed in a DL spot.
18. RHP Corey Kluber, Indians (LW: 27)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
19 | 6 | 87 | 3.65 | 1.02 |
A shaky May has given way to an impressive June, with Kluber winning both starts while allowing just two runs over 15 innings. He has hovered around a strikeout per inning for most of the season, and should continue to do so.
19. RHP Aaron Nola, Phillies (LW: 11)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
20 | 5 | 88 | 3.20 | 1.05 |
Nola has endured some growing pains this season, evidenced by his last start against Washington (3 2/3 IP, 4 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 3 K). He's a sublime talent, but owners should keep expectations in check. He's no ace - yet.
20. RHP Chris Tillman, Orioles (LW: 28)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
21 | 8 | 75 | 3.01 | 1.17 |
Tillman was at his best in his previous start, racking up nine strikeouts while posting a 15:5 ground-ball-to-fly-ball ratio over 7 1/3 shutout innings against Kansas City. He'll have his clunkers, but he's a great No. 2 fantasy option.

21. RHP Justin Verlander, Tigers (LW: 26)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
22 | 6 | 90 | 3.77 | 1.06 |
It's business as usual for Verlander, who has won both of his June starts while allowing just three runs and striking out 13 over 13 2/3 innings. The ERA won't wow you as a fantasy owner, but everything else he provides is elite.
22. RHP Zack Greinke, Diamondbacks (LW: --)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
23 | 9 | 79 | 3.75 | 1.17 |
Anyone who sold low on Greinke after his dreadful start might be kicking himself now. Greinke is back to his elite form this month, going 3-0 with a 0.78 ERA and 19 strikeouts in three starts. It's no 2015 Greinke, but it's still good.
23. RHP Julio Teheran, Braves (LW: --)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
27 | 2 | 77 | 2.85 | 1.02 |
In addition to finally recording his second win of the season last time out, Teheran piled up eight strikeouts while walking just one. The five home runs allowed in two starts this month is concerning, but he's fine otherwise.
24. RHP Jason Hammel, Cubs (LW: 17)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
24 | 7 | 60 | 2.36 | 1.11 |
Hammel won't blow you away with dominant outings, but he continues to provide terrific value relative to his late-round ADP. He's coming off his second loss of the season, but has been a great source of wins and rate stats.
25. RHP Kenta Maeda, Dodgers (LW: 29)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
28 | 5 | 65 | 2.70 | 1.06 |
After posting an ERA above five last month, Maeda has turned things around so far in June (1-1, 1.38 ERA, 14 Ks in 13 IP). He hasn't allowed a home run in his last five starts, and even had a career-best nine strikeouts last time out.

26. RHP Tyler Chatwood, Rockies (LW: 23)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
18 | 8 | 51 | 2.89 | 1.17 |
Chatwood's true dominance has come away from Colorado, but fantasy players note that he has quality starts in three of his last four home outings, as well. That said, his 5.46 K/9 rate is a significant fantasy concern.
27. RHP Aaron Sanchez, Blue Jays (LW: 30)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
25 | 6 | 83 | 3.38 | 1.23 |
Sanchez fell apart last time out, allowing four home runs in a win over Baltimore - as many as he had surrendered all season. But he has 25 strikeouts over 19 2/3 innings this month, and should bounce back nicely.
28. RHP Rick Porcello, Red Sox (LW: --)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
29 | 7 | 73 | 3.81 | 1.08 |
Porcello is back on the list, but his stint may not last long. He is just 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA in eight starts since the end of April, allowing seven home runs over 50 innings in that span. It appears we have seen the best of Porcello in 2016.
29. RHP Tanner Roark, Nationals (LW: --)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
26 | 5 | 72 | 2.93 | 1.23 |
Roark is prone to the occasional blow-up - he has allowed four or more runs in five starts - but he's also capable of impressive stretches like the one he posted last time out against Philadelphia (7 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K).
30. RHP Kyle Hendricks, Cubs (LW: 24)
VBR | W | K | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
30 | 4 | 61 | 2.93 | 0.99 |
Hendricks has failed to build on the momentum of a wonderful May, going 1-2 with a 3.44 ERA and three home runs allowed in three June starts. He doesn't strike out enough hitters to be fantasy relevant with an ERA that high.
