Kanter pens emotional letter after being disowned by father

Oklahoma City Thunder center Enes Kanter appears to have cut ties with his family after his father publicly disowned him for his support of the Gulen movement.

Kanter's father, Mehmet, released a letter Monday in which he apologized to the president and the people of Turkey for his son's behavior. Enes responded to his father's comments shortly after:

"Today I lost my mother, father, brothers and sisters, my family, and all my relatives," Kanter stated in a letter of his own, as translated by NBC Sports. "My own father asked me to change my surname. My mother, who has given me life, disowned me. For Gulen's work, which has been grown by the tears of loyal and devoted people, not one but thousands of Enes could be sacrificed. I would sacrifice my mother, father and whole family for Gulen's sake."

Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan declared the Gulen movement a terrorist organization back in May, accusing it for last month's failed coup that left nearly 300 people dead. Gulen denied having any involvement in the attempted coup.

Kanter's Twitter account was recently blocked on Turkish social media platforms as a result of his support.
