Josh McCown receiving interest from '4 or 5 teams'
After 14 seasons in the NFL, Josh McCown plans to stick around a little longer.
Having been released from the Cleveland Browns roster in early February, McCown is on the market as a free agent and has already received interest from a handful of teams. The 37-year-old knows that he'll have a better shot to get a playing opportunity if he waits until later in the offseason.
"Those are all stopping points as you see the offseason unfold: When the draft starts, when free agency hits," McCown told Sirius XM NFL radio Thursday, according to NFL.com's Conor Orr. "Because that's when moves will take place and you know, teams will be changing their roster and re-ordering their depth chart and things like that.
"That's when I think, for me, it will be opportunistic to pick the best opportunity. We've had good conversations with four or five teams and we feel good about the opportunities that will be there so it's about finding the right one."
McCown says he'd like to go to a team who is set up to win soon. He didn't specify if he's expecting to get a starting opportunity, characterizing his ideal team as "the right situation."
The journeyman quarterback also wants to sign with a team that will allow him to be close to his family in Tennessee, who he is making sure to spend time with in his current down time. With his veteran experience and competence as an injury replacement, signing as a backup to Marcus Mariota for the nearby Tennessee Titans may be an ideal fit.
If McCown signs with a team who is not the Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions, Oakland Raiders, Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, or Browns, he will have played for at least a quarter of the league by the time he retires.
