Report: Jay Cutler auditioned for broadcast role with FOX
Move over, Tony Romo. There may be a new quarterback taking to the airwaves.
Free-agent quarterback Jay Cutler is considering a move to broadcasting once his playing days are over, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports, and those days may be just around the corner.
Cutler flew to Los Angeles to audition for a television role with FOX last week, according to Jeff Dickerson of ESPN. He adds that Cutler could be viewed as a possible replacement for the analyst role on the network's second broadcast team, a seat vacated by now-San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch.
Cutler was released March 9 by the Chicago Bears and has yet to draw any significant interest for his services. His agent, Bus Cook, recently announced that Cutler "wants to play football" and has no intention of retiring, but both free agency and the NFL draft have come and gone and the veteran remains on the open market.
A career in television would provide a new look at Cutler. As a player, he has always given the impression of being a cold personality, but former teammates have sworn by him.
Cutler has played 11 seasons, three with the Denver Broncos and the last eight with the Bears. He is the Bears' franchise leader in passing yards and touchdowns.
