Alvarez dominates Chavez Jr., will fight Golovkin on Sept. 16
It wasn't anywhere near close.
Canelo Alvarez had no trouble dispatching Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night, earning a unanimous decision victory in what was a dominating shutout performance by the 26-year-old.
All three judges scored the fight 120-108 in Alvarez's favor. It was his seventh straight win, as he improves to 49-1-1 (34 KOs).
Alvarez announced after the match that he'll battle with Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) on Sept. 16 for the middleweight title. The fight everyone's been clamoring for has finally been confirmed.
"Good luck in September," said Golovkin, who was in the ring for the announcement.
"Luck is for the mediocre," Alvarez responded.
As for Saturday, the fight was about as one-sided as it gets, with Alvarez pummeling Chavez Jr. repeatedly with shots to the head and body. Chavez Jr. was in survival mode almost from the opening bell, taking punch after punch, with one of his eyes all but closed shut by the end of the eighth round. He took a beating, and he took it standing up. Chavez Jr. deserves credit for that, at least.

No titles were on the line in the super middleweight bout, and in the end, the fight was a massive disappointment.
