MLB sets single-month HR record as Smoak hits No. 1,070 in June

The previous league-wide record for the most home runs ever in one month has gone up in Smoak.

In the first inning of the Toronto Blue Jays' contest against the Boston Red Sox on Friday, Blue Jays first baseman Justin Smoak crushed a home run off Doug Fister that scored three early runs for the Blue Jays. But that wasn't all it did.

Smoak's three-run shot was also the 1,070th combined home run hit by all teams in the month of June, breaking the old record of 1,069 for the most in one month, set in May 2000.

San Francisco Giants center fielder Denard Span tied the single-month record when he hit a leadoff home run against the Pittsburgh Pirates just prior to Smoak's long ball.

The shattered record adds credence to the belief that something to do with the manufacturing process of baseballs is contributing to the higher homer count. Red Sox southpaw David Price said Thursday that pitchers around MLB have come to an agreement that something is off about the ball this season, though commissioner Rob Manfred shut down any conspiracy theories regarding the possibility of juiced baseballs earlier this month.
