Report: Clippers worry about Spurs in Chris Paul sweepstakes
Despite being the only team in position to offer point guard Chris Paul a super-max contract worth north of $210 million over five years this summer, the Los Angeles Clippers are concerned about the San Antonio Spurs luring him away, sources told ESPN's Marc Stein.
The 32-year-old Paul will be eligible for the designated player exception from the Clippers this summer, whereas other teams can only offer him a four-year contract as an unrestricted free agent.
The Spurs would need to clear salary cap space to sign anyone significant, and they'll have roster decisions of their own to make first. Manu Ginobili - who may retire - and Patty Mills are unrestricted free agents, and Jonathon Simmons is slated to become a restricted free agent. Pau Gasol could opt out, but has already indicated he wants to stay in San Antonio.
A combination of losing Mills along with Tony Parker's age and injury status would create the need for a new point guard, of which there are few better than Paul. Kyle Lowry of the Toronto Raptors is expected to also be of interest to the Spurs.
