Toronto FC routs Columbus to capture Trillium Cup
Toronto FC drubbed Columbus Crew 5-0 to claim the Trillium Cup on Friday.
Victor Vazquez opened the scoring on a 6th-minute penalty, depositing the ball calmly past Zack Steffen. Tosaint Ricketts was hauled down in the box by Jonathan Mensah, granting the referee an easy decision.
Toronto doubled the scoring shortly before the half, courtesy of a left-footed strike from Justin Morrow.
It was Vazquez who stole the show, however. The 30-year-old scored his second goal of the match on a fantastic free-kick, placing the ball expertly under Columbus' wall, that jumped at the most inopportune time.
The one blemish on an otherwise wonderful evening for Toronto was an 80th-minute red card to midfielder Marky Delgado, who was dismissed for a studs-up tackle on Columbus' Wil Trapp.
The numerical disadvantage did little to slow the host down, as Jonathan Osorio and Jordan Hamilton rounded out the scoring for Toronto, who remain atop the Eastern Conference standings.
