Pedro claims Ortiz is working out, remains in 'baseball shape'
Pedro Martinez still isn't buying the fact that his good friend and former teammate, David Ortiz, is fully committed to his retirement.
"Big Papi is working out, and I know he is in baseball shape, and the Red Sox could use a bit of his bat," Martinez tweeted late Monday.
Martinez added almost an hour later: "I didn't say David is making a come back, I said David is in baseball shape because he works out, and the team could use a swing or two."
Martinez has been adamant that Ortiz will come out of retirement ever since the slugger played his final game last October. Back in January, Martinez claimed that Ortiz was too smart to sit at home after posting one of the greatest seasons of his career, and he felt the slugger would eventually get the itch to come back.
Despite Martinez's claims, Ortiz told reporters at CC Sabathia's charity bowling event Monday that he's happily retired and enjoying his time away from baseball.
"No, not at all man, I'm happy," Ortiz told reporters when asked if he regrets retiring, according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe.
The Red Sox are certainly missing Ortiz's bat this season. The club ranks 29th in the majors in home runs and 19th in slugging, while Hanley Ramirez is hitting .253/.354/.416 with seven home runs and six doubles in 47 games as the primary designated hitter.
"They just need a hot streak where everybody is playing well at the same time," Ortiz said. "They've already had a couple of injuries. But I think they're going to be fine."
