Report: Red Sox join list of teams interested in Sonny Gray

If the old saying "pitching wins championships" holds any truth, the Boston Red Sox appear to be showing interest in one of the most sought-after trade targets in order to further bolster their rotation.

The Red Sox, who sent two highly respected evaluators to scout his last start, "are keen for" Oakland Athletics right-hander Sonny Gray, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.

The New York Yankees, Houston Astros, and Chicago Cubs have also shown interest in Gray.

Team President Dave Dombrowski has been busy adding to the team as of late, most recently agreeing to a deal with starter Doug Fister. The right-hander made his first start with the team on Sunday, going six innings but taking the loss.

Outside of early Cy Young favorite Chris Sale, the Red Sox rotation has been anything but dominant with Rick Porcello (5.00 ERA and 1.52 WHIP) and David Price (4.56 and 1.35 WHIP) both struggling recently.

After failing to build off his terrific 2015 performance, Gray has been better albeit in limited action this year. He carries a 4.45 ERA in 11 starts but has combined to a far better 3.60 FIP this year - a promising sign. His K/9 are also up to 9.0, significantly higher than his career mark of 7.7.

Gray will earn $3.57 million this year and is arbitration eligible in 2018. He's under team control until 2020.
