Report: Griffin left behind plans for Cavs to acquire George, Butler
Even though his days with the Cleveland Cavaliers were numbered, David Griffin found time to leave contingency plans behind for whoever takes up his mantle as Cavs general manager.
Some of those machinations included the framework for potential trades that would see either Indiana Pacers star Paul George or Chicago Bulls star Jimmy Butler brought to Cleveland, sources told Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com.
The mutually exclusive moves would have required trading Kevin Love to a third team in exchange for premium draft assets; the Cavaliers would have then packaged those draft picks with role players to net one of either George or Butler.
George, a free agent after the coming season, has been almost inextricably linked to the Los Angeles Lakers. He's reportedly expressed a desire to leave the Pacers for his hometown squad at the conclusion of his current contract, limiting the potential haul that Indiana could net via trade.
Butler has two years left before hitting free agency, but has been the center of trade rumors for months. The Bulls guard hasn't been particularly excited about the prospect of re-signing on a long-term deal should he be traded to Cleveland.
Even if the Cavaliers' next front-office leadership team gets a chance to examine the plans Griffin left behind, it looks like they'd have their work cut out when it comes to getting either star to stay.
