Ichiro becomes oldest player to ever start in CF
The Miami Marlins made history on Sunday's lineup card by starting the oldest center fielder in MLB history with Ichiro Suzuki setting the mark at 43 years, 246 days old.
The immortal Ichiro usurped the record previously held by Oakland Athletics legend Rickey Henderson, who started in center field in 2002 at the age of 43 years, 211 days.
Ichiro was already the oldest player to ever play center field heading into Sunday's contest against the Chicago Cubs. He switched to the position from left field in late May, interestingly against the Athletics on Rickey Henderson Field, just two days older than Henderson's 2002 mark.
Accompanying Ichiro in the Marlins outfield on the history-setting Sunday were Giancarlo Stanton and Marcell Ozuna. Ozuna has played just 10 innings in center field so far this season and has cost his team one run by DRS.
In his age-43 season, Ichiro has hit a bit of a wall, slashing an abysmal .209/.242/.297 over 95 plate appearances heading into Sunday. That didn't stop Marlins skipper Don Mattingly from placing his starting center fielder at the top of his lineup card, though.
