Presti hints Thunder await Westbrook's decision on contract extension

Russell Westbrook is taking his sweet time to make an important (and extremely lucrative) decision.

It's believed the Oklahoma City Thunder are trying to lock up their superstar long term, and by the sounds of it, the offer's on the table and the ball's in his court.

Asked about a possible contract extension for Westbrook, general manager Sam Presti told ESPN's Royce Young:

"I wouldn't really say that one's a negotiation."

The 28-year-old inked an extension last summer after co-star Kevin Durant left in free agency. From there, Westbrook put the team on his back and carried the Thunder to the postseason. He finished the campaign leading the league in scoring while averaging a triple-double, and was named the league's Most Valuable Player.

Fresh off his MVP win, it was reported Russ would prolong his career in OKC by signing another extension shortly after midnight on July 1. He's yet to make anything official, but he has indicated that Oklahoma is where he wants to be, and even called the state "home" in a recent ad. He said Tuesday that the club has the best fans in the world after supporters came out in droves to greet new star swingman Paul George.

The Thunder have given him many reasons to stay. They've made several moves to bolster the roster around him, including trading for the aforementioned George.

There's also a ridiculous amount of dough on the line. Westbrook's super-max extension would see the All-NBA point guard earn north of $207 million over five years, in addition to the $28.5 million he's guaranteed next season. That means he'd top former teammate and current Houston Rockets guard James Harden's record-breaking extension.

The choice seems obvious, but Westbrook doesn't seem to be in any hurry. As always, he's operating on his own terms.
