Curry misses cut but impresses in pro golf debut
He won't be quitting the NBA to pursue a golf career anytime soon, but Steph Curry's professional debut in his second sport was a smashing success.
The Golden State Warriors star missed the cut at the Web.com Tour's Ellie Mae Classic after back-to-back rounds of 74, but did beat four players in the field over 36 holes.
The betting over/under for Curry's lowest round was 76.5, a score he easily beat in both trips around TPC Stonebrae. The 29-year-old needed a score in the mid 60s to make the cut on Friday, but opened with a 4-over 39, all but ending his quest to play the weekend.
Curry would catch fire on his closing stretch, making two birdies in the final five holes for an ever-par 35 to finish with his second consecutive 74. His 8-over par total was only two shots behind pre-tournament favorite Aaron Wise.
His performance certainly caught the eye of PGA Tour professionals who were across the country at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio.
"To be honest, I think it's pretty special for a two-time MVP to be able to shoot 74 at a pro event and beat other pros," Jason Day told Will Gray of the Golf Channel. "I mean, we play our whole lives and the guy plays basketball and he beats some of the pros. It's impressive to see."
Now that his foray into professional golf is complete, the two-time NBA champion can get to work in offseason training to help the Warriors win their third title in four seasons.
