Report: Cavs want more compensation to complete Thomas-Irving deal

The Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to squeeze everything they can out of the Boston Celtics.

The Cavaliers are seeking additional compensation in order to complete the blockbuster deal after questions arose from Isaiah Thomas' physical, sources told Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

The initial framework of the trade had Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, and a 2018 first-round pick of the Brooklyn Nets' going to Cleveland in exchange for unhappy guard Kyrie Irving.

Cleveland can veto the trade if a suitable agreement isn't reached. The two teams have until Thursday to reach a decision.

It was already known from the time of the trade that Thomas was carrying a hip injury that was initially sustained in mid-March, but Cleveland only discovered the full extent once Thomas arrived for a physical. Boston executives hinted that Thomas might be delayed to start the season and reports suggest that Thomas hasn't even started a running regimen just yet.

Thomas' poor health was most likely already baked into the initial valuation of the deal, but the results from this physical gave Cleveland additional leverage over Boston.

From the Cavaliers' perspective, backing out of the Irving trade just lands them back at square one, wherein Irving wants to be dealt, so not much damage is done. They would just have to find another suitor.

There would be no going back for the Celtics. Thomas was strongly devoted to the organization, helped rebuild Boston into relevancy, was beloved by the fanbase, and then got dealt one year before his deserved payday. Returning Thomas and Crowder to the locker room would be simply untenable.
