Report: Giants, 3 other teams have contacted Marlins about Stanton
Becoming the first player to hit 50 home runs since 2013 is sure to turn some heads, and the Miami Marlins have received interest regarding superstar slugger Giancarlo Stanton from the San Francisco Giants, according to a report from Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
The St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers, and Philadelphia Phillies have all called as well.
Stanton reportedly cleared revocable waivers after the trade deadline without a single team claiming him - a fact incumbent upon the possibility of getting stuck with the $295-million obligation that stretches through 2028.
While teams would likely line up to acquire a player of Stanton's abilities, the Giants have expressed the strongest interest.
Along with having the second-worst record in the National League, the Giants also have had the worst production from the outfield among all 30 MLB teams, according to FanGraphs. The team has relied on 13 different players to patrol their outfield throughout the 2017 season, with only Denard Span, Gorkys Hernandez, and Hunter Pence figuring into more than 100 games each.
Stanton's hot August - which includes 17 home runs and a slugging percentage of 1.000 - has made the Marlins into surprise wild-card contenders, sitting just 4 1/2 games back of the Colorado Rockies for the second spot.
At the conclusion of the season, Jeffrey Loria will complete the sale of the Marlins franchise to a group led by Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman. Whether a new regime will be willing to part with Stanton is, largely, conjecture.
