Gervonta Davis stripped of IBF title after missing weight for Fonseca bout
Gervonta Davis has been stripped of his IBF junior lightweight title for missing weight by two pounds ahead of what would have marked his second defense of the strap against Francisco Fonseca in the co-main event to Saturday's superfight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor.
The youngster addressed the blunder on Twitter after ESPN's Dan Rafael confirmed the development Friday.
Fonseca can take the strap home with a win over Mayweather's highly touted protege, having made the 130-pound limit.
Davis, 22, stopped Jose Pedraza to win the IBF crown in January, then defended it with a third-round TKO of Liam Walsh four months later. He heads into the bout with a perfect record of 18-0, with all but one of those victories coming before the final bell, while Fonseca is 19-0-1 as a professional.
