Patriots trade Brissett to Colts for 1st-round bust Dorsett

The New England Patriots traded quarterback Jacoby Brissett to the Indianapolis Colts for wide receiver Phillip Dorsett, a 2015 first-round pick, the teams announced Saturday.

Brissett gives the Colts an option at quarterback other than Scott Tolzien, as Andrew Luck could possibly miss Week 1 or more with a shoulder injury. Brissett started two games for the Patriots as a rookie in 2016, going 1-1 and passing for 400 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He will likely battle Tolzien for the starting job while Luck is out.

Dorsett was selected 29th overall by the Colts when Ryan Grigson was still general manager. The 24-year-old disappointed with just 753 yards and three touchdowns over the past two seasons, leading new GM Chris Ballard to ship him out to New England.

Though the Patriots' receiving corps was already strong, Dorsett may have a role as a kick returner following season-ending injuries to Julian Edelman and Cyrus Jones. Dorsett's speed will also give the Patriots another deep threat alongside Brandin Cooks and Chris Hogan.
