Royals' Duffy arrested on suspicion of DUI
Kansas City Royals pitcher Danny Duffy was arrested on Sunday by Overland Park police on suspicion of driving under the influence at approximately 8 p.m. local time, according to Matt Campbell of the Kansas City Star.
Duffy is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 19.
Additional details from the police report are expected to be released sometime Tuesday. Royals general manager Dayton Moore released a statement, which reads:
We are obviously disappointed in the news we have received regarding Danny Duffy's DUI arrest on Sunday night. Danny was not part of the team traveling back from Cleveland on Sunday because he had returned to Kansas City a day earlier to undergo an MRI examination. We are still in the early stages of gathering the details, but I know that Danny has always been accountable as a member of this organization and we expect the same accountability from him as this process moves forward. We obviously do not condone anyone driving while under the influence, but this is now a legal matter and we will allow the process to unfold and cannot comment any further.
In 21 starts this season, Duffy has pitched to a 3.78 ERA with 36 walks and 116 strikeouts. The 28-year-old is in the first season of a five-year, $65-million extension he signed in January.
He was in Kansas City on Saturday to receive an MRI on his injured elbow after being placed on the 10-day disabled list.
