NCAA transfer group to seek input regarding eligibility standards
The NCAA Division I Transfer Working Group plans to reach out to other NCAA members regarding a number of transfer standards and practices that could change the landscape of college athletics.
The group will send a survey to presidents, athletic administrators, coaches, and other faculty to seek input regarding changes to practices involving student-athletes' permission to contact other universities as well as a one-time immediate eligibility clause, according to Michelle Brutlag Hosick of NCAA.org.
Current permission to contact standards require student-athletes to seek permission from their current schools to reach out to other schools regarding a transfer. If the school denies permission, the student will be unable to receive an athletic scholarship on a transfer.
The group aims to propose a "notification model" that acts as a sort of exit meeting between players and coaches at the end of athletic seasons.
The proposal also includes "an academic transfer standard for all students that would tie one-time immediate eligibility for competition after transfer to a set of academic benchmarks instead of to in what sport the student athlete competes."
The survey is set to be distributed in early September, and responses will be required by Sept. 22.
