3rd-and-93 was no accident, claims ball-kicking Mississippi State DB
After what must be one of the biggest third-and-longs in football history, Mississippi State defensive back C.J. Morgan explained how he helped set up a 93-yard third-and-goal for Louisiana Tech on Saturday.
Morgan claimed he kicked the ball intentionally downfield to force the massive loss.
"Here's my thought process," Morgan told Alex Scarborough of ESPN on Monday, while giggling. "I have one perfect chance to scoop it up, and if I don't get it, I’m gonna kick it, I'm going to keep kicking it."
Morgan kicked the ball twice when he couldn't scoop and score.
"I saw no one else got it," he said. "So I said, 'Well, I missed on the first try, I guess I know what I'm about to do - just keep on kicking it.' I wanted to score a touchdown myself, but at the same time I knew it would look good for the whole defense if we could get them backed up as far as we could because we were on the 6-yard line."
The play ended in an 87-yard loss, though Bulldogs defensive coordinator Todd Grantham would have liked to have seen a different result.
"At the end of the day," Grantham told Morgan, "we want the ball. So you should've just fallen on that."
"Yes, sir. You're right," Morgan replied. "I wanted that touchdown, though."
