Boxer Jake LaMotta, depicted in 'Raging Bull,' dies at 95
Jake LaMotta, the former middleweight boxing champion whose life was depicted in the classic film "Raging Bull," died Tuesday at the age of 95.
LaMotta's fiancee, Denise Baker, said he passed away in a Miami-area hospital from complications of pneumonia, reports The Associated Press.
The boxer, who was played by Robert De Niro in one of his most memorable roles, was a ferocious fighter with one of the best chins in professional boxing.
His ability to absorb punishment led him to go toe-to-toe with Sugar Ray Robinson six times in the 1940s - a rivalry widely considered one of the best in the sport's history. LaMotta handed Robinson the first loss of his career.
He retired from boxing in 1954 with a record of 83 wins, 19 losses, and four draws with 30 knockouts, according to the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
