Girardi admits to Game 2 mistake: 'I screwed up'

Joe Girardi has taken the blame.

One day after the New York Yankees manager opted not to challenge a hit-by-pitch call on Lonnie Chisenhall which led to a Francisco Lindor grand slam and an eventual extra-inning loss to the Cleveland Indians, the skipper revealed he made a huge error.

"I take responsibility for everything, and I feel horrible about it," he said, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. "I screwed up. It's hard. It's a hard day for me. But I've got to move forward and we'll be ready to go tomorrow."

The 52-year-old not only came under scrutiny for his poor decision, but also for his head-scratching comments following Friday's game about not challenging the call.

"Probably being a catcher, my thought is I never want to break a pitcher's rhythm," Girardi explained Friday. "That's how I think about it."

Girardi's words weren't taken well by Yankees fans or by the team's players. After the gut-wrenching loss, closer Aroldis Chapman liked an Instagram post that called the manager "a complete imbecile."

Girardi and the Yankees, down 2-0 in the American League Division Series, head back to New York for Sunday's Game 3.
