Report: Red Sox to interview Cora for manager

With the Houston Astros two wins away from the World Series, bench coach and former major league infielder Alex Cora is generating interest from the Boston Red Sox for their vacant managerial job.

Team president Dave Dombrowski is expected to meet with and interview Cora in New York at some point during the American League Championship Series, a league source said, according to ESPN's Scott Lauber.

The Red Sox were granted permission to interview Cora, who, along with Chicago White Sox bench coach Joe McEwing, is expected to meet with the New York Mets for their managerial opening, per David Lennon of Newsday Sports.

Despite not having any former major league experience as a manager, Cora has been interviewed for similar job openings in the past, most recently with the Arizona Diamondbacks last offseason. The club eventually settled on former Red Sox coach and manager of the year candidate Torey Lovullo.

Cora was hired by the Astros in 2016, and has served as manager and GM for a winter ball team in his native Puerto Rico. He has experience with the Red Sox organization, where he played from parts of 2005 to the 2009 season, a stint that included a World Series title in 2007.
