LaVar fires back after Lonzo's rough debut: 'Who is Patrick Beverley?'
Warning: Story contains coarse language
Get used to this. LaVar Ball has an even bigger podium now that his oldest son is in the NBA.
Following Lonzo Ball's shaky regular-season debut Thursday against Patrick Beverley's blanket defense, LaVar responded to some supposed Beverley trash talk heard during the Clippers' 108-92 win over the Lakers.
"Yeah, you shut the motherfucker down," the senior Ball told ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk. "And your check still ain't going to go no higher than what it is. Yeah, you shut him down. OK ... who is Patrick Beverley? He played all last year and nobody said nothing about him. Now we are looking at your first game. Why? Because Lonzo's name is attached to it."
Beverley is alleged to have yelled, "Weak ass motherfucker. Bring him out on the court with me and I will tear his ass up," at the end of the game. It's not actually known if he was referring to Lonzo.
Still, LaVar insisted on further one-upmanship.
"One game. OK, you still don't have your own shoe, you are still not your own boss," he said. "I know why you are looking at me. And you want to tell me that I got your son! Well, I got two more you can try to get some of, too. They will be here, don't worry about it. I don't worry about one game."
Lonzo had more subdued postgame comments.
"When we win, people won't talk," he told The Vertical's Shams Charania. "But if we lose, people will think it affects me. It's wins and losses for me. We know it's a process."
Beverley, nine years Lonzo's senior, held the rookie to three points on 1-of-6 shooting, often pressing him on defense.
