Report: Giants have offered Panik, prospects in potential Stanton deal
While a report surfaced late last week that the San Francisco Giants had made an offer to the Miami Marlins for super slugger Giancarlo Stanton, what the potential deal consisted of remained unknown - until now.
The Giants have reportedly offered up Joe Panik as well as outfield prospect Chris Shaw and right-handed pitching farmhand Tyler Beede, in exchange for both Stanton and Dee Gordon, according to Craig Mish of SiriusXM.
Gordon is an interesting addition to the original report. With the Marlins going through a rebuild, the 29-year-old's name has popped up in rumors. The speedy second baseman has nearly $40 million remaining on his contract over the next three years.
Whether or not the Marlins would retain any of Stanton's salary is not made clear, though one would suspect the prospect haul to be better if the Giants weren't taking on all of the outfielder's remaining $295-million salary.
Panik, 27, put together a respectable season in a down year for the Giants. In 138 games, he posted a .288/.347/.421 slash line with 10 home runs and four stolen bases.
Meanwhile, Shaw and Beede are the No. 2 and No. 3 prospects in the Giants' system, according to MLB Pipeline.
The 24-year-old Shaw boasts a tantalizing power tool while sitting outside of the league's top-100 prospects. In 88 games with Triple-A Sacramento, Shaw slashed .289/.328/.530 with 18 homers.
Meanwhile, the 24-year-old Beede struggled in his first full season in Triple-A. Through 19 starts and 109 innings, the right-hander had a 4.79 ERA and 5.02 FIP.
