Report: Dodgers, Mariners among 7 finalists in Ohtani sweepstakes
Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani has narrowed his list of suitors to seven and will meet with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres, Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners, and Los Angeles Angels, sources confirmed to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Ohtani and his representatives have informed the other teams of his decision. The Giants are expected to meet with the Japanese phenom on Monday, multiple sources told Jim Bowden of Sirius XM Radio.
The New York Yankees were one of the surprising omissions as general manager Brian Cashman confirmed Sunday that despite a strong presentation, his team did not make the final cut.
Ohtani is said to have interest in playing for a small-market team on the West Coast. Of the final seven, the Rangers ($3.5 million), Giants ($1.835 million) and Mariners ($1.5 million) have the most money to offer the 23-year-old. The Padres, Dodgers, and Cubs are limited to $300,000 while the Angels can offer $1,315,000.
