Jets' McCown to serve as player-coach from sidelines vs. Saints
New York Jets quarterback Josh McCown may be unavailable to play for the rest of the season due to a broken hand, but the 38-year-old won't be taking a day off when the Jets face the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
Head coach Todd Bowles has granted McCown's request to serve as player-coach in the Week 15 matchup, potentially setting up his post-playing career.
"Yes, I can see that in him," Bowles said, according to Austin Knoblauch of NFL.com. "If that's what he wants to do, I can see him being an excellent coach when he's done playing."
McCown has enjoyed what could be considered a career year in his first season with the Jets, completing 67.3 percent of 397 pass attempts for 2,926 yards, 18 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
The journeyman signed a one-year deal with the Jets to serve as a stopgap under center until either Bryce Petty, Christian Hackenberg, or an unforeseen option was ready to take over in 2018.
The Jets were the seventh team McCown has played for.
