Marlins exec: We'll be the ones to start any trade talks about Realmuto, Yelich
After a report Monday indicated that catcher J.T. Realmuto had requested a trade from the Miami Marlins, club president of baseball operations Michael Hill issued a statement insisting the team will make those types of decisions.
In the statement, obtained by Jerry Crasnick of ESPN, Hill writes: "Should we feel like we need to make a trade involving any of our under contract, controllable players, we will be the ones who initiate that conversation and always do what's best for the organization."
Outfielder Christian Yelich also reportedly requested a meeting with his employers after the trades of Giancarlo Stanton and Marcell Ozuna.
While Realmuto and Yelich are sure to attract many suitors on the trade market, there is less incentive for the Marlins to unload those assets. Realmuto is entering his first season of arbitration eligibility and is under team control for the next three seasons, while Yelich is under contract for the next five seasons and due a maximum of $58.25 million.
