Report: Luxury tax could keep Yankees from reuniting with Frazier
Major League Baseball's luxury tax may be the only hurdle stopping a reunion between the New York Yankees and third baseman Todd Frazier.
The Yankees remain interested in re-signing the 31-year-old, according to a pair of sources of NJ Advance Media's Brendan Kuty, but the sides haven't spoken much during the offseason because of how close the Yankees are to the $197-million threshold.
One of New York's main goals during the offseason is to stay below the mark, and as of Tuesday, its projected payroll is at about $178 million, according to The Associated Press.
Frazier, who made $12 million last season, is reportedly seeking a multi-year deal which could put him out of the running at third for the Yankees.
The two-time All-Star hit just .222 in 66 games for the Yankees after coming over in a trade with the Chicago White Sox, but still posted a .788 OPS with 11 home runs and 32 RBIs.
Overall, Frazier slashed .213/.344/.428 with 27 home runs and 76 RBIs last season.
