Report: Phillies among teams that contacted Marlins about Yelich
While the Miami Marlins are reportedly only willing to part with Christian Yelich in the event of a "huge overpay," that hasn't stopped the Philadelphia Phillies from checking in on the outfielder's availability, according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.
Amid the Marlins' firesale, the Phillies have been making moves, committing nearly $100 million to Carlos Santana, Pat Neshek, and Tommy Hunter.
They have an intriguing farm system, boasting six top-100 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline, and might be able to overpay for Yelich, who's still just two years into a seven-year, $49.6-million deal.
In 156 games during the 2017 campaign, the 26-year-old posted a .282/.369/.439 slash line with 18 home runs and 16 stolen bases.
With Yelich capable of playing center field, it's possible that if he joined the team, Odubel Herrera, who's known for having some defensive lapses, would be relegated to a corner outfield spot. The Phillies have a bit of a logjam in the outfield, as the signing of Santana seems to have made Rhys Hoskins their full-time left fielder, with Nick Williams manning the other corner.
