Gettleman offers Eli Apple clean slate
The 2017 season was a tumultuous one for New York Giants corner Eli Apple.
The second-year pro was benched, fined, suspended, and criticized by his teammates. On top of that, he had a forgettable year on the field.
To end the campaign, Apple was suspended for the season finale for what the team deemed "a pattern of behavior that is conduct detrimental to the team." In the days that followed, safety Landon Collins called the 2016 first-round pick "a cancer."
It all brought into question whether the Giants would retain Apple under new management.
The Giants' new general manager Dave Gettleman met with the corner on Friday and offered some insight.
"It went fine. We talked. He was very attentive. He was focused. ... I told him he's got a clean slate for me," Gettleman said to Steve Serby of the New York Post.
"Let's move forward. Let's see what happens."
Gettleman has opted to give the roster that went 3-13 a reprieve in 2018. He's also said he'd like to move forward with quarterback Eli Manning rather than turn the page.
Apple, along with the rest of the Giants, will be afforded an opportunity to redeem himself next season.
