Report: Marlins eyeing Nats' top prospect Robles in Yelich deal
With news that the Washington Nationals are interested in acquiring Christian Yelich, the Miami Marlins are said to be eyeing the club's top prospect, Victor Robles, who also happens to be baseball's No. 1 outfield prospect, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.
However, more teams are entering the mix for Yelich, with the Toronto Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, and Texas Rangers all with some level of interest, Cafardo reports.
Robles has long been considered one of baseball's top prospects, and the 20-year-old is believed to be ready to make the full-time jump to the major leagues as early as next season after a short 13-game stint last year. Scouted as a plus runner, Robles slashed .324/.394/.489 over 37 games while hitting three home runs and stealing 11 bases with Double-A Harrisburg. In 27 plate appearances as a September call-up with the Nationals, he posted a .766 OPS.
Interestingly, while Yelich is a highly sought-after trade target, the Nationals seem to possess one of baseball's top outfields already. Adam Eaton is set to come back after missing the 2017 campaign with a torn ACL and join an outfield that already features Bryce Harper and Michael A. Taylor.
While Taylor isn't considered a quality bat, his .271/.320/.486 production last year was still five percent better than the league average by wRC+. Even further, the 26-year-old is considered a premium defender in center field.
However, with the possibility that Harper could depart via free agency next winter, perhaps Washington's rumored interest in Yelich is a contingency plan for the potential loss of the superstar.
While the 25-year-old Harper could end up with a record-breaking salary, Yelich is under contract for the next five seasons and is due a maximum of $58.25 million through the 2022 season.
